The places worth your days on the island, and how to reach each one
Puerto Rico is about 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, and almost everything visitors come for sits within a two-hour drive of San Juan. That means you can base yourself in one place and still see a rainforest, a glowing bay, a 500-year-old walled city and an offshore cay in the same week. Here is where to go, and what each place is actually for.
El Yunque National Forest
45 minutes east of San Juan. The only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System — 28,000 acres of waterfalls, natural rock water slides and jungle trails. The waterfalls people come for sit off the main road, so a guide makes a real difference here.

The Bioluminescent Bays
Fajardo, Vieques or Lajas. Puerto Rico has three of the world’s five bioluminescent bays. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the practical one from San Juan; Mosquito Bay in Vieques is the brightest recorded anywhere but needs an overnight. Timing matters more than location — go near a new moon.

Old San Juan
In the city. A seven-block colonial district founded in 1521, walled, cobblestoned, and guarded by two Spanish forts. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest European-founded settlement under the US flag. Walkable in a morning, worth far longer.

Fajardo
An hour east. The eastern gateway: the bio bay at Laguna Grande, ferries to Vieques and Culebra, and boats out to the uninhabited cays at Icacos and Palomino, where the snorkelling is as calm as it gets on this island.

Vieques
Ferry or short flight from Fajardo. Isla Nena — wild horses on the roads, empty beaches, and Mosquito Bay, which holds the Guinness record as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Give it two or three days rather than a day trip.
Guavate and the Pork Highway
45 minutes south. The Ruta del Lechón, a mountain road lined with open-pit roast pork restaurants. Busiest and best at weekends, when it turns into something between a food crawl and a street party.

Charco Azul and the Arenales caves
Inland. Cave systems and blue natural pools, with cliff jumping for those who want it. Less visited than El Yunque and quieter for it.
