What to wear and bring
- Comfortable closed shoes. The cobblestones are uneven and slick when wet — not the day for new sandals
- Sun protection. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. Shade is intermittent
- Water. Refill stops exist but bring a bottle
- A camera. This is the most photogenic part of Puerto Rico

How long does it take to walk Old San Juan?
The whole colonial district is about seven blocks square, so you can cross it in twenty minutes. Seeing it properly — the forts, the plazas, the cathedral — takes about two and a half hours with a guide.
Is Old San Juan walkable?
Very. It is one of the most walkable historic districts in the Caribbean. The surface is uneven cobblestone and there are hills, so wear real shoes.
Is Old San Juan worth visiting?
It is the oldest European-founded settlement under the US flag and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are in Puerto Rico at all, yes.
