Small-group tours to the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System
El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System, covering 28,000 acres about 45 minutes east of San Juan. Guided El Yunque rainforest tours run about 6 hours, include round-trip transportation, and combine waterfall swimming, natural rock water slides, cliff jumping and a rope swing.
What makes this different from driving yourself
Most visitors drive into El Yunque, stop at the visitor center, walk a paved path, and leave having seen maybe a tenth of the forest. The waterfalls and natural water slides people actually come for sit off the main road, and you need someone who knows where they are.
We run small groups. We handle the transportation and the reservations, bring the safety gear, and take you to the swimming holes and rock slides that do not appear on the visitor center map. Your guide is from here.

What the day looks like
Meeting point, 7:00 AM. Guests staying in San Juan meet us at the North Shopping Center parking lot in Condado. From Isla Verde, Río Grande or Luquillo the driver collects you directly. From there we travel together in an air-conditioned vehicle. The drive east runs about 45 minutes.
Into the forest. We head past the crowded first stops toward the trailheads that matter. Your guide explains what you are looking at — the sierra palms, the coquí frogs you will hear before you see, why this forest gets over 200 inches of rain a year.
Waterfalls and swimming. You will swim in freshwater pools fed directly by mountain runoff. Cold, clear, and usually ours alone.
The natural water slides, cliff jump and rope swing. Smooth rock chutes carved by centuries of water flow, ending in deep pools. There is a cliff to jump from if you want it, and a rope swing to finish. This is the part everyone photographs.
A local kiosk on the way back for traditional food and a drink, then back to San Juan in the afternoon — in time for dinner in Old San Juan.

Frequently asked questions
How far is El Yunque from San Juan?
About 45 minutes by car, roughly 25 miles east. Our tours include round-trip transportation from our meeting point in Condado, so you do not need a rental car.
Is the tour difficult?
Moderate. Expect uneven, muddy terrain and some scrambling over rocks. If you can walk a couple of miles and are comfortable in water, you will be fine. Tell us about mobility concerns when booking and we will adapt.
Can children do this tour?
Yes, and families do it regularly.
What happens if it rains?
It rains in a rainforest — often, and usually briefly. Tours run in normal rain. We only cancel for genuine safety conditions such as flash-flood risk, and you are rebooked or refunded in full.
When is the best time of year to visit El Yunque?
The forest is worth visiting year-round. December through April is drier and busier; August through November brings more rain and thinner crowds. Water levels are often at their most dramatic right after rainfall.
